There was so much to see and so much information I forgot to ask if the attraction had changed names and what the significance is of the name Caviar.
I was a little confused because the parking lot- and this listing- says Cajun Jack's Swamp Tours but there is only one boat and that is the Captain Caviar Swamp Tour. We went to the museum right across hte road while we were waiting but it took some doing to get back across the divided highway and into the parking lot. Fortuneately, instead of getting rough the weather completely cleared and we had a great time on our private tour. The nice, informative ladies at the Cajun Coast visitor center called Captain Caviar up and he agreed to take just our family out on a three hour tour, a three hour tour (Gilligan's Island reference for those of you who grew up in the 70's). They make great tamales and Po'boys for after the tour, or to take with you if you can time it right.ĭid not know about this tour in advance- we were going to do an alligator farm/swamp tour in Houma but it was closed because of weather. On the walk from the parking lot to the dock you cross a piece of and old Spanish era road, and on the route you'll pass thru a set of locks in the bayou, and later an island where the pirate Lafitte is thought to have buried treasure.

Saw shrimp boats, swamp flowers, giant cypress trees festooned with Spanish moss, eagle nests, and the setting where the first Tarzan movie was filmed around WWI. It was a little cool to see gators, but we saw an abundance of bird life including eagles, cormorants, pelicans, ducks etc. Jack was an excellent guide, and obviously enjoys talking about the history and culture of the bayou country. Second, it is essential to call ahead of time and not just show up looking for a tour you will almost certainly waste your time.
First, the name has changed to Captain Caviar's Swamp Tours.
